Many people in the world, at some point in their lives, have battled depression. Yes, many, because depression is a disease that we can all suffer from, and only a few manage to successfully overcome it.
Depression And Types
Depression is described as feeling sad, unhappy, despondent, or down. Many of us feel this way from time to time for short periods.
Now, clinical depression is a mood disorder where there are feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration. These make facing the day-to-day difficult. It can last a few weeks or even months.
There are different types of depression. We will not stop to talk about them, but we will give a general overview of them.
1 Depressive episode
2 Recurrent depressive disorder
3 Dysthymia
4 Bipolar depression
5 Psychotic depression
6 Atypical depression
7 Seasonal Affective Disorder
It is necessary to be clear that, for nothing in the world, if you are diagnosed with some type of depression, you must suspend your medication. What you can do is help yourself manage it with the following self-help techniques that I will share below.
1 Exercise
It is well known that exercising causes the body to release endorphins, a protein that is produced in neurons. This not only reduces the sensation of pain but also helps you feel well-being.
You do not need to join a gym or practice a high-performance sports routine. Just put on some comfortable tennis shoes and go for a run, walk, or bike ride. This physical activity will stimulate the secretion of this protein and you will feel better.
You can also take dance classes or whatever gets you moving; You will see how little by little you feel better.
2 Take care of the body
One of the clearest symptoms of depression is the neglect of personal hygiene. This is why you should make an effort to clean yourself, not only of this but also to feed and dress.
Even if it costs you a lot, set a daily goal to get out of bed and take a shower. Then another small goal, breakfast, and so on. Try to make your whole day full of small goals that have the purpose of self-care. watch over you.
3 Be nice to yourself
I know it will be difficult, but try to go one step further and be nice to yourself when looking in the mirror; you only have yourself.
Why do I recommend this? because many people with depression treat themselves very badly. They feel little; they tell themselves that they are a failure and that they are good for nothing, that is a mistake.
You have many reasons to feel that way, believe me, I know, but nothing is gained; on the contrary, you lose yourself.
Life often seems meaningless. It seems that everything conspires to send you down, but mistreating you is adding salt to the wound. Be compassionate with yourself; do the fighting. Just try to take care of yourself a little bit each day, just one day at a time.
4 Ask for help
No person, healthy or living with depression, has the holy grail of wisdom. You also don't need to figure everything out on your own; so when you feel like you can't take it anymore, ask for help.
Whether it's a friend, family member, or your therapist; many times all we need is someone to listen carefully.
5 Look for moments that generate well-being
It may be that in the middle of a crisis you see everything gray and without a way out, but it is not like that. There is always light at the end of the tunnel.
Just put in a little effort to find a reason to feel good every day. Perhaps you have pets; they provide so much company, peace, and comfort that it is inevitable not to feel good in their company.
Go for a walk if you like rainy days, eat ice cream or say hello to people even if you don't feel like doing it; this will give a little light to your life.
Listen to music, watch the series you've always liked or read. Those little hobbies give you a reason to keep going another day. Whatever gives you something to focus on and be happy about will do you a world of good.
6 Write a diary
It may sound like a cliché, but writing helps you get everything you feel inside of you. You can fill it with the experiences you live every day, both good and not-so-good.
Try to spend 20 minutes on this task at night, but make an effort to make it a daily task. This is a time dedicated just to you and your emotional release.
7 Use relaxation and breathing techniques
These are techniques that I personally use to treat my anxiety and they are 100% effective. I have also applied them in my darkest moments and they have helped me a lot to get out of them.
Conscious breathing exercises help your body to oxygenate well and slow down. It's like a reset from scratch to feel calmer and more comfortable with yourself.
What meditation does is “take you out” of the real world for a while. It is an encounter with the depths of your being that helps you understand yourself better.
8 Try to have good sleep hygiene
For those of us who suffer from anxiety and depression, sleeping can be challenging. Many times you sleep a lot and other times you suffer from insomnia that robs you of years of life. For this, try to have a schedule to sleep in; also try to adapt your room so that the environment is comfortable. Don't drink caffeinated beverages before bed; this will help you sleep better.
A small step is the beginning of change
Great things in life begin with one small step followed by another. This is how you can help yourself to stay in balance during those periods when everything weighs and nothing makes sense.
We can all move forward living one day at a time. Do not give up and you will see that after the pain you will find reasons to move forward.
